I light a candle
for all the grays
that arrived in my hair
I hadn’t wanted
them there.
Grey, the color of where
the body sometimes
lives its sorrows.
In the fall I see a friend
with a beard
some years gray
and I remember
grey, also how
the body
expresses its love,
after loss.
So I wish the grays, harboring
in my hair, these overnight,
striations of love,
a year’s anniversary, a belated
welcome.
